On shape variation of confined triatomics of XY2-type
Harmonic confinement of initially isolated symmetric triatomic molecules can induce a transition from a bent, directed bond-type structure to helium-like angular correlation of the two equal particles. In an exactly solvable modification of the Hooke-Calogero model it is demonstrated that there is a well-defined transition between the two cases if the confinement strength is increased. Furthermore confinement is shown to reduce the system's effective diameter, which at the transition point has shrunk by 26% in comparison to the isolated syste
On the transition between directed bonding and helium-like angular correlation in a modified Hooke-Calogero model
Angular correlation in three-body systems varies between the limiting cases of slightly perturbed equi-distribution, as in the electronic ground state of helium and directed bond-type bent structure, as in the isolated water molecule. In an exactly solvable modification of the Hooke-Calogero model, it is shown that there is a sharp transition between the two cases if the particles' masses are suitably varied. In the Hooke-Calogero model attraction between different particles is harmonic and the repulsion between equal particles is given by a 1/r 2 potential. The bent structure appears in the angular distribution function if the masses of the two equal particles are below a critical value, which depends on the mass of the third particle. Above the critical value, the angular correlation is of helium type and exhibits a minimum at 0° corresponding to the Coulomb hole and a maximum at 180°. The model thus demonstrates the modulating role of mass in the transition between semi-rigid structure and more diffuse nuclear state
Limitations on the superposition principle: superselection rules in non-relativistic quantum mechanics
The superposition principle is a very basic ingredient of quantum theory.
What may come as a surprise to many students, and even to many practitioners of
the quantum craft, is tha superposition has limitations imposed by certain
requirements of the theory. The discussion of such limitations arising from the
so-called superselection rules is the main purpose of this paper. Some of their
principal consequences are also discussed. The univalence, mass and particle
number superselection rules of non-relativistic quantum mechanics are also
derived using rather simple methods.Comment: 22 pages, no figure
Epistemic and Ontic Quantum Realities
Quantum theory has provoked intense discussions about its interpretation since its pioneer days. One of the few scientists who have been continuously engaged in this development from both physical and philosophical perspectives is Carl Friedrich von Weizsaecker. The questions he posed were and are inspiring for many, including the authors of this contribution. Weizsaecker developed Bohr's view of quantum theory as a theory of knowledge. We show that such an epistemic perspective can be consistently complemented by Einstein's ontically oriented position
Rituximab in B-Cell Hematologic Malignancies: A Review of 20 Years of Clinical Experience
Rituximab is a human/murine, chimeric anti-CD20 monoclonal antibody with established efficacy, and a favorable and well-defined safety profile in patients with various CD20-expressing lymphoid malignancies, including indolent and aggressive forms of B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Since its first approval 20 years ago, intravenously administered rituximab has revolutionized the treatment of B-cell malignancies and has become a standard component of care for follicular lymphoma, diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, chronic lymphocytic leukemia, and mantle cell lymphoma. For all of these diseases, clinical trials have demonstrated that rituximab not only prolongs the time to disease progression but also extends overall survival. Efficacy benefits have also been shown in patients with marginal zone lymphoma and in more aggressive diseases such as Burkitt lymphoma. Although the proven clinical efficacy and success of rituximab has led to the development of other anti-CD20 monoclonal antibodies in recent years (e.g., obinutuzumab, ofatumumab, veltuzumab, and ocrelizumab), rituximab is likely to maintain a position within the therapeutic armamentarium because it is well established with a long history of successful clinical use. Furthermore, a subcutaneous formulation of the drug has been approved both in the EU and in the USA for the treatment of B-cell malignancies. Using the wealth of data published on rituximab during the last two decades, we review the preclinical development of rituximab and the clinical experience gained in the treatment of hematologic B-cell malignancies, with a focus on the well-established intravenous route of administration. This article is a companion paper to A. Davies, et al., which is also published in this issue
A First Search for coincident Gravitational Waves and High Energy Neutrinos using LIGO, Virgo and ANTARES data from 2007
We present the results of the first search for gravitational wave bursts
associated with high energy neutrinos. Together, these messengers could reveal
new, hidden sources that are not observed by conventional photon astronomy,
particularly at high energy. Our search uses neutrinos detected by the
underwater neutrino telescope ANTARES in its 5 line configuration during the
period January - September 2007, which coincided with the fifth and first
science runs of LIGO and Virgo, respectively. The LIGO-Virgo data were analysed
for candidate gravitational-wave signals coincident in time and direction with
the neutrino events. No significant coincident events were observed. We place
limits on the density of joint high energy neutrino - gravitational wave
emission events in the local universe, and compare them with densities of
merger and core-collapse events.Comment: 19 pages, 8 figures, science summary page at

Search for muon neutrinos from gamma-ray bursts with the ANTARES neutrino telescope using 2008 to 2011 data
9 pages, 8 figures; added Fig. 1 with effective area, updated Fig. 8 (b) according to arXiv:1204.4219 ; Références publication Astron Astrophys 559 (2013) A9International audienceAims. We search for muon neutrinos in coincidence with GRBs with the ANTARES neutrino detector using data from the end of 2007 to 2011. Methods. Expected neutrino fluxes were calculated for each burst individually. The most recent numerical calculations of the spectra using the NeuCosmA code were employed, which include Monte Carlo simulations of the full underlying photohadronic interaction processes. The discovery probability for a selection of 296 GRBs in the given period was optimised using an extended maximum-likelihood strategy. Results. No significant excess over background is found in the data, and 90% confidence level upper limits are placed on the total expected flux according to the model
A search for time dependent neutrino emission from microquasars with the ANTARES telescope
Results are presented on a search for neutrino emission from a sample of six microquasars, based on the data collected by the ANTARES neutrino telescope between 2007 and 2010. By means of appropriate time cuts, the neutrino search has been restricted to the periods when the acceleration of relativistic jets was taking place at the microquasars under study. The time cuts have been chosen using the information from the X-ray telescopes RXTE/ASM and Swift/BAT, and, in one case, the gamma-ray telescope Fermi/LAT. No statistically significant excess has been observed, thus upper limits on the neutrino fluences have been derived and compared to the predictions by models. Constraints have been put on the ratio of proton to electron luminosity in the jets
Constraining the neutrino emission of gravitationally lensed Flat-Spectrum Radio Quasars with ANTARES data
This paper proposes to exploit gravitational lensing effects to improve the sensitivity of neutrino telescopes to the intrinsic neutrino emission of distant blazar populations. This strategy is illustrated with a search for cosmic neutrinos in the direction of four distant and gravitationally lensed Flat-Spectrum Radio Quasars. The magnification factor is estimated for each system assuming a singular isothermal profile for the lens. Based on data collected from 2007 to 2012 by the ANTARES neutrino telescope, the strongest constraint is obtained from the lensed quasar B0218+357, providing a limit on the total neutrino luminosity of this source of 1.08 x 10(46) erg s(-1) This limit is about one order of magnitude lower than those previously obtained in the ANTARES standard point source searches with non-lensed Flat-Spectrum Radio Quasars
Matter in Strong Magnetic Fields
The properties of matter are significantly modified by strong magnetic
fields, Gauss (), as are typically
found on the surfaces of neutron stars. In such strong magnetic fields, the
Coulomb force on an electron acts as a small perturbation compared to the
magnetic force. The strong field condition can also be mimicked in laboratory
semiconductors. Because of the strong magnetic confinement of electrons
perpendicular to the field, atoms attain a much greater binding energy compared
to the zero-field case, and various other bound states become possible,
including molecular chains and three-dimensional condensed matter. This article
reviews the electronic structure of atoms, molecules and bulk matter, as well
as the thermodynamic properties of dense plasma, in strong magnetic fields,
. The focus is on the basic physical pictures and
approximate scaling relations, although various theoretical approaches and
numerical results are also discussed. For the neutron star surface composed of
light elements such as hydrogen or helium, the outermost layer constitutes a
nondegenerate, partially ionized Coulomb plasma if , and may be in
the form of a condensed liquid if the magnetic field is stronger (and
temperature K). For the iron surface, the outermost layer of the
neutron star can be in a gaseous or a condensed phase depending on the cohesive
property of the iron condensate.Comment: 45 pages with 9 figures. Many small additions/changes. Accepted for
